A beginning of my favorite topic. The hidden stuffs in music. I am starting with one masterpiece of Mr.Ilayaraja. This below musical piece is from the tamil movie "Thalapathi". Mani Ratnam uses this instrumental version in 2 scenes - 1. When Shobana tells her lover Rajnikanth that she is going to marry someone else. 2. After a year or two, Rajnikanth meets her accidentally after she got married to the district collector. Both the scenes depict the pain of love being lost and still prevail in some corner of their hearts. There can never be any better musical piece that can do justice to these scenes than this one composed by Isaignani Ilayaraja.

Now, let us look deeper into this track. This is basically an instrumental version of a stanza in one of the songs in the same movie. The song is "Sundari Kannal oru Sedhi", which is not-so-stereotypic duet song set amidst a war zone. Let us check out the exact line of the song.

In the below video, check from 1:11 to 1:22. The lines say "நான் உனை நீங்க மாட்டேன் நீங்கினால் தூங்க மாட்டேன். சேர்ந்ததே நம் ஜீவனே " [Translation - I will never leave you, If I leave, I can never sleep. My souls came together now]. This part of the song depicts coming together of two souls, eternal and true love etc. The irony is Ilayaraja/Mani sir used the exact musical piece in the background when the lovers break up.
So What could be their point?? There is always a warning sign. Here, the metaphorical sign could be the tune. The tune from 1:11 to 1:22 has some sort of hidden sadness in it. The lyrics eclipse the sadness by bringing in the notion of eternal love. When the lovers leave each other, the lyrics get washed away and only the tune remains. The tune is nothing but sadness, which was always there - as a warning sign or a hidden meaning.
As they say, Love is always blind. May be its deaf too. The worst part is you can do nothing about it and learn to strive through it. True Story!!
P.S: Eternally Grateful to Mani Sir and Mr.Ilayaraja for this soul stirring part of the movie.
